Making the Band: The Emotion of the Moment

Aside from the filler of the personal drama between Aubrey and Donnie, this weeks episode of Making the Band 4 was all about Ditty trying to pull emotion out of the boys. They are not going back into the studio until they make him feel it.
The thing is that Diddy already picked them based on their talent; he knows they can sing but he doesn’t want them to get too comfortable resting on their talent. One of the coaches tells them that if Diddy doesn’t feel the emotion he feels like he’s not making any money. Another tells them they are too focused on the perfection of the voice but they need to let go and give in to the emotion of the moment.
As a demonstration of what he wants, he has the Danity Kane girls each sing a short solo. “None of that whispery stuff.” Diddy tells them. “Unlike a lot of other girls out there y’all can really sing.”

I don’t know why I continue to be surprise that the girls can sing. Perhaps its my predisposition to think pop singers are all looks and no talent. Contrived looks aside, these girls can sing and when they sing, they make you feel it. They completely through themselves into the moment – as they’ve been taught – and have mastered the expression of that emotion in the moment.
The Day 26 boys have one more chance to prove themselves. Diddy does not want to waste any time, he has a recording schedule to keep and they have an album to make. “We’re running out of time,” he admonishes the boys.
They start singing…and Diddy stops them…They go through this cycle several times and Diddy looks like he’s frustrated. “Y’all are too worried about your looks,” he says remarking about their facial expressions, mocking their mannerisms while singing. “I know you can sound good but can you make me feel it?”
Intimidation is getting the best of them and they really need to just let go. “If we just be ourselves,” Robert realizes, “that will be exactly what he wants.”
Edit to the boys finally sing their song I Want You Exclusive with the emotion Diddy is looking for.
“See there was a moment there were you didn’t sound perfect but you sounded naked,” Diddy observes. “Y’all gotta get naked.”
Much to the boy’s relief Diddy gives the green light for them to go back into the studio, warning them not to disappoint him.
