Radiohead’s w.a.s.t.e central: “It’s Pretty Dark in Here…”
Filed under: RadioheadTags: Social Networking, Waste Central
Radiohead has ventured further into the online world with w.a.s.t.e central a place for music enthusiasts to connect with each other and bond over their passion. My first reaction is to wonder if the site will become a place for Radiohead fanboys to gab about the greatness of Radiohead?
You have to sign up to see any content including user profiles and even the official blog messages, which may or may not be worth it depending on how interested you are. As far as I can tell, it’s not all that active a community but it is brand spanking so it could take a little time. Users can blog, or post pictures, videos, remixes, music and even get a Radiohead email address.
Here’s the thing though, even with all of these features, the site seems dead and not really social networking friendly. I remember the early days of MySpace and how people would just go through user profiles and add any and everyone who seemed interesting. It was relatively easy to find out if you had something in common with someone because the user profiles collected so much infomation and people were pretty open.
As the site grew in popularity people started limiting their friends to people they knew in real life but back then, it seemed like social networking was all the rage and not just amongst teens. Most of the people I met on MySpace were college students and artsy types…that is until the teen invasion and the aquisition by News Corp., then all hell seemed to break loose.
As with all things Radiohead, w.a.s.t.e. has a sort of über cool, abstract vibe to it. After visiting several user pages, I saw no blog entries and no…well networking. It wasn’t until I visited the message board that I saw any remnant of a community but from a cursory glance the exchanges look juvenile and silly.
If this site is to be successful, there needs to be a way to make the site more inviting; more workable. Time will tell if this effort to connect their fans will be successful or prove futile.
One user commented, “It’s looking pretty dark in here.” My sentiment exactly.

Death Cab for Cutie covers “Love Song” by The Cure. What’s the point of a cover that sounds almost exactly like the original? Lollapalooza is burning up the internet with buzz and is slated to be the biggest music…
